"arguing on the internet is futile"

If you can talk on the internet, why can't you also deal with responses to that on the internet? Sure, talking on the internet is a bit like writing postcards and letters to more or less random strangers, or talking on the telephone. As such it should be taken with a grain of salt, but nothing on the internet happens without real people pressing keys somewhere (or having coded bots). If you call someone on the phone, and they reply something you can't handle, do you then also exclaim they should tell that to someone outside their home...? After you called them at home, no less?
